What is Trigeminal Neuralgia?

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a disease of the brain and nervous system. The pain is usually felt on the trigeminal nerve on one side of the face and occurs in the form of short, severe bouts of pain. The exact cause of TN is not known, but some conditions may be associated with brain diseases such as nerve compression, fracture, tumour, or multiple sclerosis. Treatment can be done with surgery, medications, or Gamma Knife.

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a neurological disease that causes continuous or irregular pain in certain areas of the face. These pains are spread by the trigeminal nerve located in the jaw, nose, thigh, lip or tooth area. The pain can be very severe and can be short-term or long-term.

The exact cause of TN is not known, but it can occur due to pressure exposure of the nerve end, constriction, or tumors. TN treatment can vary depending on the severity of the pain and the patient’s condition, and different methods such as medical treatment, surgical treatment, neuroleptic block, radiofrequency ablation, or Gamma Knife may be used.

Symptoms: Short-term, severe bouts of pain are felt in areas on one side of the face, especially during movements of the face (eating, talking, etc.). Causes: The cause of TN is not known exactly, but it may be related to causes such as nerve compression, fracture, tumors or brain diseases.

Treatments: Treatments such as surgery, medications, physical therapy, neuroleptic block, radiofrequency ablation, and Gamma Knife may be performed. The choice of treatment can vary depending on the severity of the disease and the patient’s condition.

Prevention: There is no specific way TN can be prevented, but early detection and treatment can help improve the course of the disease.

The surgical treatment of trigeminal neuralgia disease is carried out in our clinic with the application of awake surgery. In this way, although the patient does not remember it later, it is checked whether the pain feeling disappears by waking up during the operation. According to this result, the operation is directed and the procedures continue.

The Relationship Between Gamma Knife and Trigeminal Neuralgia.

Gamma Knife is a radiosurgery method and can be used in neurological diseases such as trigeminal neuralgia (TN). Gamma Knife for the treatment of TN can be used as an alternative to surgical methods.
Gamma Knife radiosurgery is performed using sensitive radiation waves that focus on the pain center located on the trigeminal nerve. Radiosurgery aims to eliminate the source of pain by destroying the pain center.

Gamma Knife is a less invasive method than surgical methods and is painless. However, Gamma Knife radiosurgery may not be suitable for all patients, and other treatments should be considered depending on the patient's condition.

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a neurological disease that causes continuous or irregular pain in the facial area.

The exact cause of TN is not known, but it can occur due to pressure exposure of the nerve end, constriction, or tumors.

Symptoms of TN may include facial pain, jaw pain, nose pain, tickle pain, lip pain, and toothache.

Trigeminal neuralgia treatment can vary depending on the severity of the pain and the patient’s condition. Different methods such as medical treatment, surgical treatment, neuroleptic block, radiofrequency ablation or gamma knife can be used.

Medical treatments used to treat trigeminal neuralgia may include painkillers, antiepileptics, corticosteroids, and antispasmodics.

Surgical treatments used to treat trigeminal neuralgia may include surgery on the nerve root, microvascular decompression, and methods such as gamma knife.

During trigeminal neuralgia treatment, side-effects may include increased pain, numbness, weakness, hearing loss, or vision impairment.

Results after trigeminal neuralgia treatment may include complete elimination of pain, reduction of pain, or ineffectiveness of treatment.

Trigeminal neuralgia may recur and may not recur.

With trigeminal neuralgia, life can be affected in different ways according to the severity and duration of the pain and can negatively affect the quality of life.
